Warden of Keble College (retired) and Professor of Late Antique and Byzantine History
I have taught and published on late antiquity and the history of Byzantium for many years both at King’s College London and as Warden of Keble College in Oxford from 1994 until I retired. I am a historian but I have also been interested in religion and have written on literature, late antique Judaism and early Islam. My most recent book, Arguing it Out (2016) deals with literary dialogues in twelfth-century Byzantium. A new collection of my early articles will be published by Routledge in May 2023, with the title From the Later Roman Empire to Late Antiquity and Beyond. I am also currently the president of the Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies (SBPS).
